Some Websites of Interest to CS Students
slashdot   http://www.slashdot.org
"News for nerds, stuff that matters"
Google   http://www.google.com
The best search engine on the planet.
delicious   http://del.icio.us
An excellent link collector, bookmark stasher, collaborative filter something or other. A very good place to look and scan links to see what might be of interest.
metafilter   http://www.metafilter.com
Metafilter and linkfilter (below) are places where people post (often with brief commentary) links that might be of interest to others. Can be very rewarding. Metafilter tends to be more selective than linkfilter and there doesn't seem to be any way metafilter will take on new users.
linkfilter   http://www.linkfilter.com
Like metafilter but anyone can join, post links and so on.
dictionary   http://www.dictionary.com
Used to be the best online dictionary. Perhaps the wikipedia dictionary will do better in a bit. Now you'll find some words marked as "Premium content" for which you are supposed to pay. Try "define:word" in google too.
mozilla   http://www.mozilla.org
Mozilla is now several browsers and a mail reader and who knows what else. The mozilla based "firefox" browser is my standard browser.
sourceforge   http://www.sourceforge.net
sourceforge is a site that hosts open source projects. Lots of goo stuff here.
freshmeat   http://www.freshmeat.net
software announcements. Primarily open source stuff - but not exclusively so.
the jargon file   http://www.jargon.org
I'm told that reading this file will help you understand some of my vocabulary. Things like "cruft" vs "kluge" and so on.
The Software Interview   http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000073.html
Yup, this is it. Oddly when I did a mock interview in a class one day I was seriously criticized by one of the students for evaluating the person on exactly this kind of criteria. Perhaps he'll find out some day.
Other websites of interest
Internet Movie Database   http://www.imdb.com
All about movies.
wikipedia   http://www.wikipedia.org
The wikipedia is a user authored encyclopedia based on a wikiwiki. It is both informative and interesting in many ways.
