The following is a hand transcription of the text of page four. Any errors are likely to be my own.
When the Dilator has been warmed and lubricated, it is ready to use. Care should be taken not to get it too hot at first, remembering that the rectal nerves are not as sensitive, in some cases, as when normal health prevails.
If the case is one showing a discharge of any kind it is best to bathe the parts with castile soap and warm water.
The warmed Dilator is inserted gently into the rectum, up to the first flange. In old cases, or new sensitive ones, where the parts are very tender, this may be uncomfortable at first, but no harm can come to the normally developed person by submitting to the Dilation. The Dilator should be held in place until the muscles grasp and retain it.
Now turn on the heat by means of the light colored button on the regulator and allow the Dilator to warm up to a vitalizing temperature, pressing the black button of regulator to keep the temperature from rising too far.
An effort should be made to use the dilator regularly at least once and preferably twice each day at the same hour; preferably the first treatment should be early morning.
A half hour is a fair application but longer periods can produce nothing but good. If one should go to sleep with the Dilator in place the current should be cut off at regulator or the connector separated from the pins of the Dilator.
In prostate disorders, and womb trouble in women, frequent treatments are beneficial and desirable.
If the patient is an habitual user of cathartics, these should be discontinued by the end of the first week of treatment and if necessary warm injections may be used to relive the colon as a last resort.
The stool should positively be sought twice daily at the same hour and when nature calls no delay should be allowed. Do not read books or newspapers while trying to evacuate, thought should be given to the task at hand whether it is successful or not.
Lacking facilities at any time, the Dilator should not be neglected because electricity is unavailable. This is, of course objectionable, but the dilator should be gently warmed by external means, such as immersion in warm water and used. This maintains the habit of rectal dilation so necessary in this treatment. Never insert a cold object into the rectum.
Avoid cathartics as early as you can, unless you have competent medical advice to the contrary because they cannot cure your trouble.
Use the Electrothermal Dilator diligently and earnestly; do not expect hap-hazard treatments to work a miracle or an old case to respond immediately to a cure. Be patient, the result is certain and positive.
Badly ulcerated cases or those of tubercular, syphilitic or cancerous nature should have prompt and competant medical attention.
We are always pleased to hear from users of the Dilator as to their progress and we welcome inquiries about any phase of the subject. When writing about the Dilator it is best to mention the serial number and model number of the apparatus and designate each part by its number as shown on the figures of the "How to Use" instructions.
Do not try to force matters by using too much heat. n
