I found this brochure in the parking lot of the local WalMart (I know, who picks up stuff in the WalMart parking lot? I don't usually, but saw the cover and had to look) and thought that the guy on the cover and the diagram of the hill (which seems oddly Dr. Seuss-ish) inside needed to be saved and savored.
Cabbage hill is a spectacular stretch of road on I84 between Pendleton, Oregon and La Grande. It climbs up the eastern face of the Blue Mountains, rising about 2000 feet in just a few miles. There is little major vegetation on this face of the hill so there are views all along the way. There are also some wonderfully tight curves.
The weather can change quite drastically from bottom to top. Pendleton is rather warm (sort of) and dry. The top of the hill is colder and wetter - in the winter, quite snowier. I've driven from warm overcast with bare ground in Pendleton to cold snow and almost blizzard conditions with several inches of snow on the road at the summit.
Great picture of a terrified driver, note the smiley face button on his hat.
The eyes in the truck near the bottom!
Nowhere near as fun.
